The disposal of nuclear waste is a scientifically and technically controversial subject that is seeking solutions worldwide. Deep geological disposal is the strategy most widely followed for radioactive waste disposal by nations operating nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities. In Switzerland, the Law on Nuclear Energy obliges plant operators to dispose of their waste themselves. The Confederation provides the supervision and licensing and manages the search process for disposal sites under the “Sectoral Plan for Geological Repositories”.
The authors of the “www.nuclearwaste.info” blog have been following nuclear waste management in Switzerland and worldwide for over 40 years. In the blog, they publish the results of their analyses since March 2015. These concern scientific and technical topics, followed by regulatory and supervisory issues, financial aspects, etc. This article summarizes the articles published as part of this blog. An initial collection of blog contributions from 2015 to 2018 has been published online (Buser, M. and Wildi, W., 2018, www.nuclearwaste.info: Archives 2015-2018: 759 p., https://archive-ouverte.unige.ch/unige:106583). Here is the continuation of the texts in German, French and English up to August 2024.
